Woodland Advocate Program

Training/Qualifications

Advocates receive training so that they are able to help their neighbors and feel comfortable doing it. Advocates do not become foresters or resource experts. Their job is to introduce landowners to reputable professionals, give peer to peer advice, and be a source of support and encouragement. They offer a landowner perspective and facilitate the use of available resources. They participate in ongoing training and seek to educate themselves about woodland issues that are of concern to their neighbors. They know their limits and stay within them. If they have expertise in other areas, they clearly indicate when they are speaking as a Woodland Advocate and when they are not. They keep adequate records so they can provide useful service.
